HPAI background
HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, Bird Flu), has spread rapidly from East Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa over the past three years. The H5N1 virus is highly virulent for domestic poultry, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys. It also has demonstrated the capacity to infect humans (more than 300 since 2003), with a mortality rate exceeding 60 percent as of October 2007. Thus, HPAI is both a significant threat to commercial and backyard poultry sectors (FAO sectors 1-4) and a significant potential threat to human health should the virus mutate into a human-to-human transmissible form.
